Baby Carrier Types

Stretchy Wraps

Stretchy wraps are a long piece of stretchy fabric. They usually come in one size. Wraps have no clasps or rings. The wrap we carry is the Boba Wrap. There are technically no weight restrictions for the Boba Wrap. It has been tested at 45 pounds and showed no signs of stress or overuse. It is ideal for the first year of life, but you may use it as long as you and your baby are comfortable. The Boba Wrap is only recommended for use with the front carry (not forward facing) position. Check out out the Boba Wrap Tying Guide for more info on how to use the Boba Wrap.

Pouches

The pouch sling is an easy to use sling with no buckles or rings. Pouches are one shoulder baby carriers that can be used from newborn through toddlerhood. Most pouches are not adjustable and therefore must be purchased in the size that is right for you. The pouch sling is compact and easy to slip into a diaper bag and they come in an array of colors and fabric choices. We are adding Slinglings pouch style sling soon.

Ring Slings

Ring slings are a long piece of fabric that is attched with a set of rings that is worn over one shoulder. The ring slings is adjustable and therfore can be worn by anyone who wants to carry the child. The ring sling is a good choice for newborns, but can be used through toddlerhood. For newborns, the ring sling is a good choice because you can wear the baby in a cradle or upright position. Ring slings work well for toddlers who want to be upright and can be used in hip-carry position. Nursing in a ring sling is not hard and the tail can be used as a cover-up. The ring sling does have a higher learning curve than the pouch, but is more adjustable. The ring sling we carry is the Maya Wrap ring sling. Check out the sling user instructions for information on how to use the Maya Wrap Sling. Maya Wrap has a video collection for information on how to use the Maya Wrap Sling. Mei tais are Asian-inspired carriers that consist of a rectangular body and has four straps attached. The Mei tai is tied on your body using the four straps. There are no buckles, snaps or rings on a mei tai. The meit tai is very versatile and can be used for front, back or hip carry. The mei tai can be used from infant well into toddlerhood. You can use a mei tai for an new born as long as it has a headrest for added head support. I carry my 3 year old in my mei tai.
