General Cloth Diaper Washing Instructions

General Washing Instructions

  • Store wet or soiled diapers in a dry diaper pail. A pail liner can be used. Rinse or shake solids into the toilet. A spayer can be handy to help with this.
  • You should wash your diapers ever 2-3 days for best results.
  • Start with a short cold wash/rinse cycle with no detergent to get the mess off the diapers.
  • Do a hot wash cycle using a diaper friendly detergent with an extra rinse.
  • Line dry or dry in the dryer.
  • Do not use bleach or fabric softener

Choosing a Detergent

Avoid detergents that have any of the following: optical brighteners, fabric softener, bleach of any kinds, enzymes or fragrance. Bottombumpers has a nice list on their site HERE

Other Helpful tips

  • Make sure you fasten all hook and loop closures before you put them in the laundry to avoid them snagging on other diapers.
  • Use a higher water level to allow the diapers to rinse completely
  • If your diapers smell stiny after taking them out of the washer then you are most likely not using enough detergent to get them clean. Your diapers should smell clean.
  • Do not use any fabric softener or dryer sheets as these will coat the diaper and make them repel.
  • Do not use any oil based diaper creams as these will coat the diaper and make them repel as well
  • Baking soda can be sprinkled into your diaper pail to help with odors
  • Placing your diapers out in the sun is one of the best ways to deal with stains.
  • If your diapers smell clean after they have been washed, but have an ammonia small after you child wets then your detergent is not being washed out properly. Make sure you are using the correct type of detergent. Your water type may greatly affect how much detergent you need. Stripping your diapers may help with this
